about

The songs contained on this album span many years of American Music. From the dawn of the 20th Century all the way to the year 2000. The earliest example is probably "Take a Whiff On Me" which deals humorously with cocaine use in the early 1900's. My first exposure to this song was a recording by Leadbelly.
I learned the song "That's All Right Baby" from a recording by a man called Clear Rock. He was serving time in the Texas penitentiary called Sugarland when he recorded. This is an example of an old form called the Play Party song.
The songs and the artists I have chosen to interpret here typify the wide ranging American Folk Tradition. From the Folk Blues of Leadbelly to the harsher Mississippi sounds of Bukka White, Blind Joe Reynolds and Tommy McLennan. From idiosyncratic artists Reverend Gary Davis and Sleepy John Estes to the more accessible 50's Chicago style of harmonica great Little Walter.
Also included in this album are several of my own compositions in which I have tried to distill these influences, in order to bring awareness and make my own contributions to the fine tradition that is American Music.
