about

The songs on this record come from a wide array of sources. Also included are several of my own compositions, some of which were written in the American folk/blues tradition, while others lean more towards rock and roll.
I should also like to say a few words about the other artists whose songs I have chosen to perform here, "Canned Heat Blues" comes from Tommy Johnson, a fine Mississippi bluesman who recorded from 1928-1929. Johnson was immortalized when a rock band in the 1960's took Canned Heat as their name. Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly, is the source for two songs: "True Religion" and "Big Fat Woman." Leadbelly had a wonderfully vast repertoire of songs and was a great contributor to American music. Big Fat Woman was performed by Leadbelly on the piano, while here I have made an arrangement for 12-string guitar. "If You're ever Lonely Darling" was written by Lefty Frizzell, one of the greatest voices in country music and a fine songwriter as well. "France Blues" is an old jug band tune, my favorite of which is by Mark Spoelstra from 1964. Wanderin' has been performed by big bands, folk singers, and bluesmen alike. It is simply a beautifully timeless piece. "Forgive Me Dear" was recorded in 1955 by Faron Young who unfortunately passed away last year (1996). "Brownsville Blues" comes from Sleepy John Estes who recorded this song in 1929. I've added a little roll and tumble to my version.
There are recordings available by all of these artists, I would urge anyone interested to seek them out.
